We had the good fortune of connecting with Marielena Gomes and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Marielena, every day, we about how much execution matters, but we think ideas matter as well. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
The reason I started my business was because I have profound passion of art and handmade products. I’m proud to be Venezuelan and I felt the need to help my people in a way where they feel valued for what they do, knowing that there are a lot of great talented people in my country. After adding a few Venezuelan artists, I also added artisans from other part of the world. Currently, I have Venezuelan, Mexican, Colombia and Italian artisans. My mission was always to create a brand that gives back to the makers. I work directly with artisan communities to create everyday classics with an artisan twist and to show how artistic and beautiful our culture is . I have been in the retail industry for over 13 years and I understand the value of handmade products and my dream is to be able to have a showroom where people can come and see all the unique handmade products I carry.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m currently a Retail General Manager for a kids store. I’ve been in the retail/ hospitality Industry for over 14 years. My brand is something that I do on the side and hopefully it will be my full time job in the near future. It has not been an easy road, I came to this country when I was 18 years old, basically my entire career has been in hospitality. I was going to school full time and working full times my dream was always to get a career regardless of how long would take me to graduate. I have the experience of almost all the departments in the hospitality industry until I stepped into the retail area and I felt in love and I didn’t want to move. I was lucky enough to opened different stores in different hotels from scratch and that’s how my passion for Retail in handmade products started.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I will take her to Wynwood to see the art and how that area is set up with fun boutiques, restaurants, etc. To eat and drink: Altar, Casa Florida’s The Citadel, La Placita. Visit/hand out:: Upper Buena Vista, Wynwood área, Design district. All this places are very unique and fun to check out .

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
One of my good mentors was Deborah Bush, she was my previous boss and excellent mentor in my retail industry. Also, another person that encouraged me and in a way shed a light on me to understand and look for handmade products is my sister in law Greicy Conde that makes also one of a kind handmade products.
