We had the good fortune of connecting with Maritza Benson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Maritza, what inspires you?
Growing up in the diverse culture and colors of South Florida have inspired how I look at the world and continues to inspire me in my pursuits. I was lucky to experience a time when the arts and culture where beginning a new renissance. I enjoyed seeing artists, poets, and musicians who had a way of expressing themselves authentically. I was inspired to get involved with the arts and am now a curator.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I work as an art curator so I am blessed to work with art on a daily basis. I love all forms of art and I am fascinated by the creative process. I love the challenge of creating a dynamic exhibition that incorporates different forms of art including performance, music, and installations. I reached this place in my life because of searching for my happiness. I had been diagnosed with cancer and after recovering, I needed to be happy and I knew that art always brought me joy when I would go to galleries and art walks. I volunteered at my local non profit gallery and was asked to be the curator when the curator I was working with left. Working as a curator came so naturally to me that I was surprised and humbled with the great comments I received. I overcame the challenges I experienced by researching, connecting with the artists, and always asking myself ‘ how can I help the artists?’. I have learned that you have to follow your passion in life and listen to your heart for it will guide you down the path to fulfillment. I want the world to know that even though the day seems dark and you feel alone, you can always look inside yourself and find the magic and love that brings you solace.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Definitely my husband has been my number one support. Without his love and encouragement I don’t think I would be where I am today. Another person I want to Shoutout is Akasha Rosewater from the EmoFit Method. I have had quite a few challenges in my life that have left me questioning my existence. Working with Akasha and her specific methods for emotional fitness has been a game changer in my life. Like after a good workout at the gym, I am left feeling stronger and more determined to live my life after a session with her. We are told to control our emotions and hide our feelings in our culture. This leads to mental health problems and conflict in our relationships. I have learned that by embracing my emotions and learning what they are communicating, I can be more in tune with myself and my life can be lived with more joy and happiness.
