We had the good fortune of connecting with Matita Baquero and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Matita, how did you come up with the idea for your business?
Before starting Matita’s Kitchen in summer 2020, I had already been selling sweets locally in Weston but as a hobby. When the pandemic started, that hobby came to an abrupt stop, and all the free time at home led me to start selling the chicken pâté. For years, I always took my pâté as a gift for friend gathering and birthday parties and I always received the same comment “why don’t you sell this?! This is delicious. I guess the idea came from all the years of positive feedback and the free time at home.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am an economist by profession, but since I got married I decided to be a stay-at-mom. Cooking and baking has always been a passion of mine, which I believe is what led me to create my own business. It hasn’t been an easy road, but it has been worth it. Matita’s Kitchen is a family owned business, operated by my daughter Ana, who handles all the PR and marketing, and myself.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Definitely shopping! I think Miami’s shopping scene is one of the best. My favorite malls are the Aventura Mall and Sawgrass Mills. Design District is another mall that has been growing a lot and the area is filled by top stores and great restaurants. To eat, a must for me is Tacology at Brickell City Centre. And of course to the beach. Sunny Isles is one of my favorites and also walking at Dania Beach’s pier is amazing. A day trip to the Everglades park would also be a fun activity to do in Miami. And lastly, I would take her to the Vizcaya Museum & Gardens.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would love to give a shout-out to Venprendedoras, a non-profit organization with the purpose of uniting and helping small businesses owned by Venezuelan women all over the world. They opened their arms to us and have been helping us in getting out business known in the Miami area.
