We had the good fortune of connecting with Meghan Garrett and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Meghan, how do you think about risk?
In life, there is no reward without risk. Growing up, I always did what was necessary to get by and get to college. Once I got into Florida Atlantic University in 2020, I quickly realized that college isn’t for me and that I wanted to create the life that I love from scratch. I took the initial risk to quit school, get my personal training certification, and follow my passion.
Navigating life in 2022 at 20 years old in a new job field and not going to school with all of my friends was definitely difficult. While all of my closest friends were worried about what party they were going to on a Friday night, I was at home planning ways to make my future self better. Now, 2 years later, I am the happiest I have ever been. Living in Boca Raton, Florida and working at The Institute of Human Performance is my idea of a perfect life. I have made many close friendships and relationships within the last two years that will last a lifetime. If I had not taken the initial risk of following my heart, I would not be living the life that I love. I never wanted to work in a corporate office and live the same life every single day. With the risks I have taken within the last two years, I have already started to see the rewards that come with it.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Starting out in the fitness industry was difficult due to the fact that I had no prior experience training people. I had been working out for about 2 years before I trained my first client but it’s very different working with a client versus alone.
Being a woman in this industry has its pros and cons as well. A lot of other women prefer to train with a female trainer which helps, but there is also a stigma against female trainers since it is a male dominant industry.
I have improved my training style and etiquette on the gym floor through gaining knowledge and experience. Training a wide variety of individuals with different goals has helped me get to where I am today. My mentors have also shared their wisdom and experiences to help me grow in my own career.
My biggest take away from following my dreams is that knowledge is power. I am still learning new things every day that take my career to the next level and I’m getting better every day.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
The first spot anyone should check out would be the Institute of Human Performance. The energy in that gym is unmatched! I also love going to the beach, they are all so nice and my favorite place to relax. All of the restaurants in Mizner Park and on Atlantic Avenue in Delray Beach are amazing and you can’t go wrong with any of them!!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
The Institute of Human Performance, owned by Juan Carlos Santana, has been my biggest support system throughout my journey. They took me in when I had no experience in the fitness industry. Inside the walls of that gym, we are all family and I know that I have a great group of people in my corner at all times!
