Meet Michael Amquy | Painter

We had the good fortune of connecting with Michael Amquy and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Michael, what makes you happy? Why?
Painting make me happy because it give me a sense of freedom it let me express myself

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My pieces express the emotional struggles I have faced during my life. I have been interested in art since I was a child, when my mom introduced me to visual expression. It was a way for me to be vulnerable with my feelings. Having a neurological condition, I have always felt misunderstood and I took art as a form of staying in tune with myself as I went through emotional ups and downs.
The creative process has become self-healing for me. I believe that art can be a tool to heal humanity as well. My background is a mix of three cultures: Ukrainian, Brazilian and Native American; but my vision is universal. I grew up within the Lakota tribal tradition, when I paint, I tend to channel my inner spirits in the form of abstract paintings that represent my deepest emotions caused by my everyday encounters with society and life itself. Nature is a constant reference that allows me to bring out my inner strength . I put my anger, my fears, worries and sadness that plague my heart into my work.
Art is an escape and a form of communication where I am able to feel more
Confident . I try to create beauty by putting my conflicted mental state into my different abstract designs. I use a variety of techniques to spreed the paint along the canvases, like pouring the paint in a funnel and watching it until the paint makes its form and different color shades . I let my emotions guide me through the painting process and its design, making each work unique in itself.
this day and age. Keeping an abstract shape and form, the colors, emotions and textures in my work can be seen in multiple ways by the spectator that is looking at at them.I would like the collectors of my pieces to make their
My pieces are not made to be perfect but each me has its own character like we humans do. In mother natures eye we are all beautiful creations in our own world. My works meaning and purpose is to reflect the dichotomy of peace and destruction we are all living in own conclusions of the madness and humbleness I deposit into every unique design.
