We had the good fortune of connecting with Mikaela Barnes and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Mikaela, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I think taking risks as an entrepreneur comes with the job, I think having someone on your team or in your circle who can challenge you is essential. I love to jump off cliffs and not look back but I have found surrounding myself with educated and successful people is incredibly helpful for growth. I have learned to take pause before big decisions and lean into the people closest to me, whose opinions I trust and respect. You don’t have the listen to every piece of advice you get but reaching out for counsel and weighing the pros and cons of a decision can help guide you in the right direction.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
The Non Dairy Fairy is not only an allergy friendly, vegan dessert company, we are lifestyle brand. What sets us apart is our focus on providing our desserts on a wholesale level making them avaliable to restaurants, hotels and catering companies. We have clothing line of athletic wear “fitness fairy” and also host events out of our kitchen space and wellness center, Zen Mind Space. In many ways I still consider The Non Dairy Fairy a start up company, we were established in 2017, but growing a company from the ground up takes time and perseverance. I am still learning every single day but I think the greatest lesson though it may sound cliche is being mindful and intentional about who you surround yourself with, whether it’s a team of people or your social circle surrounding yourself with people who are rising the vibrations, who are ambitious and goal oriented is vital. To quote Cardi B, “I’m just a regular, degular, shmegular girl…” who had an idea and is putting one foot in front of the other to build a brand and to bring representation to the wellness space. I want to create space for total wellness in my community and make vegan friendly desserts widely and easily available.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I live in Fort Lauderdale, just outside Wilton Manors, which I believe is such a gem! The first place we are going is to grab coffee is at The Alchemist, not only is their coffee and food delicious but the setting so whimsical, this will have to be on a Tuesday so we can wander from coffee to La Mexicana for the best taco Tuesday specials, $2 tacos, $4 margaritas and sangria in a beautiful colorful garden. A few more wilton hot spots we would have to visit, is brunch at Rosies, cocktails at Drynk and dancing at The Venue.

I would make sure we hit up “yoga on the beach” at The Ocean Manor Resort that is hosted every single morning at 8:30 am. Following yoga and movement, breakfast or lunch would be at Sandbar Grille, one of the only spots that is beachfront in Fort Lauderdale, (the also have a great happy hour!) To continue with our beach-y day dinner that night would have be at Thai on the beach, the sweetest spot located above a pizza shop with amazing Thai food and a great view of the beach.

Flager Village is another must visit, coffee at Circle House, shopping at Montce, and strolling around art walk every last Saturday of month to discover local artists while enjoying food and snacks from food trucks.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
First, I have to thank my family and support system. I quite literally wouldn’t be able to dream chase without my husband and help from my mother in law as a caretaker to our son. In terms of inspiration and encouragement, I would have to shoutout Charlie Grippo and Elena Pezzo the founders of Green Bar & Kitchen a plant based, vegan staple in Fort Lauderdale. It was Charlie who nick named me, The Non Dairy Fairy and who encouraged me to run with it.
