We had the good fortune of connecting with Nadia Jazelle and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Nadia, how do you think about risk?
As a model, you are constantly taking risks – investing in products for hair, makeup, clothes, and more, while also pursuing specific gigs. But to excel without excessive financial risk, it’s important to research which type of modeling is best suited for you, so you don’t waste your valuable time and money on fields you’re not interested in. To minimize the risk of danger, research the company you’ll be working with, reach out to other models who have worked with them before, and if you feel uncomfortable, bring a friend along to make things more comfortable. Yes, there is always the risk of wasting money, but it’s all about making every cent count. My suggestion is to go after gigs that offer either exposure or payment – both are equally valuable.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Modeling is a unique field where one becomes a walking, breathing piece of art that represents different brands. However, starting this journey can be quite challenging and uncomfortable. As a child, I admired models for their great confidence and never thought it would be this difficult. My first show was quite competitive, with models threatening to take my spot until I prayed with my friend before hitting the stage. When I walked on the runway, it felt like I was walking on air and public speaking at the same time. That experience gave me an unexplainable sense of peace and sparked my love for the runway. Initially, I struggled with deciding what type of model I wanted to be, which proved to be time-consuming. My biggest challenge came when I applied to my first agency and New York Fashion Week. My portfolio was completely ripped apart, and I realized I needed better photographers, clothes, and retouching. Although it was tough to receive criticism, I used it as motivation to get better. It took time, but I eventually found resources to improve.
My first time at New York Fashion Week was also unsettling, as I didn’t research enough shows and believed that one show was enough. It felt like a popularity test, and the judges’ opinions differed from what I expected. Although I didn’t get the chance to walk the runway for the show I was fitted for, I was able to participate in another show and do a photoshoot with a fellow model.
Despite these adversities, I am determined to understand myself and the modeling industry better. I have been researching, practicing, networking, and attending trainings to improve my skills and grow as a person. This year, I am focused on developing my overall modeling abilities and becoming the best version of myself.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Are you looking for the perfect way to spend a day in Detroit? Start by visiting the Detroit Institute of Art (DIA), one of my favorite places since childhood. As an artist, I find inspiration and a fresh perspective on society every time I visit. With art from all over the globe, the DIA is a must-see destination. Next, stop by Bucharest Grill for their delicious shawarmas. There are plenty of options to choose from, and they’re all amazing. Finally, end the day at Honest John’s for some refreshing drinks and a delicious meal. With a great drink selection and tasty food, it’s the perfect way to cap off your day in Detroit.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Starting a career in modeling can be daunting, especially when you lack the financial resources. However, my family and friends have been my pillars of strength and support throughout this journey. They attended my shows, offered advice, and encouraged me every step of the way. Even when I encountered rude women at my first show, my best friend stood by me and continued to come to future shows. My family and church family also came to show their support, and my sister even did my hair for some modeling opportunities. Additionally, my best friend’s mother, who is also a model, provided me with valuable tips and guidance. Despite the challenges, I am grateful for the loving people who have graced my journey. I am especially thankful for my agency, Polished Models Co., and my agent, PresTina Glover. PresTina has been a mentor to me from the start, even before signing me. She has constantly provided me with advice on how to advance my career and has uplifted me during times of adversity. I am truly blessed to have such a supportive team behind me.
