We had the good fortune of connecting with Nightingale Ngo and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Nightingale, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
Quite simply, it is because God created me as a musician and I am so grateful. Music knows no boundaries and brings camaraderie and peace. Being a musician has given me opportunities to bring lift people’s spirits, bring them calmness, and joy. It’s allowed me to be part of the big moments of people’s lives. As a bonus, I’m a piano teacher and I have the immense privilege of helping students of all ages (my youngest student is 3 and oldest is 94!) create music and beauty into the world through music.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My goal for each student who comes through my studio is to have a holistic music learning experience. This means that they learn piano by reading notes, articulation, dynamics – in other words, music theory and ear training are an integral part of lessons. As a musicologist, I love music history and also strive to incorporate that into lessons, which gives students a deeper understanding of their pieces and the composers who wrote the pieces. Being a musician, studio owner, and independent studio teacher is not easy. The reality is that students can drop lessons at anytime. It is part of the business but it is never easy. It honestly feels like a break-up most times. Thankfully, most students do persevere and graduate from the studio.
Being a musician is not easy but, as with being a teacher, it is so rewarding. I’ve recently released two albums (in one year!) – a Christmas album and a Disney album. Streaming platforms are notorious for paying musicians very little (less than 1 cent per stream) so, while this is not a viable source of income, it’s been a joy and honor to share music with the world and have listeners from different countries.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
– Boat ride to see the millionaire homes – Joe’s Stone Crab (depending on time of year)
– Knaus Berry Farm (depending on time of year)
– Wynwood Walls
– Everglades airboat ride
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Shoutout to my mom, my church, and my studio families for their support!
