We had the good fortune of connecting with Ryan Hertel and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ryan, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Becoming an entrepreneur just happened pretty naturally. It wasn’t a matter of wanting to be one, it simply came down to “well, this is the only way to achieve my goals.” So that’s what I did.
I didn’t choose to become an entrepreneur necessarily — instead I just knew where I wanted my business to be, so I had to make decisions to make my vision a reality. That required dropping out college, working part-time at Dunkin’ Donuts, lots of (literally) sleepless nights, and so much more I never directly signed up for. It’s all just part of the trial.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
My core business venture is Socialocca Marketing Agency. I say “core” because my grand plan has always had a marketing agency at the heart of it. Having a team that can produce ads, websites, social media posts, blogs, graphics, logos, and everything in between is the perfect weapon for an entrepreneur to wield. The other side of the coin being that it’s VERY difficult to maintain a stable marketing agency.
With Socialocca, which I officially launched back in 2017 (I was working in creative marketing years before then), I’ve only recently found balance as a marketing agency; having to reduce our services offered, becoming more strict with my own time, and streamlining our processes as best as possible for efficiency.
New flexibility and structure has allowed us to take Socialocca entirely to the digital realm, and we definitely enjoy being an all-online agency. Socialocca.com is a “virtual rainforest”, and we only want to continue expanding in that direction. Being an online marketing agency has allowed us to organically reach new customers all over the globe — we’ve loved discovering and working with new businesses all over the world!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Ahhh, when isn’t there something going on in South Florida? No really, it’s always fairly crazy. #1 suggestion is to BRUNCH. A SoFlo brunch is NOT your average edgier breakfast time… here, it’s a ritual.
Even once brunching is complete, there’s no slowing down. Now, spend your day day drinking through spots along Los Olas, and you DEFINITELY won’t be the only one with the idea.
And then to take things next level, Miami does the trick. If it doesn’t, then you’re definitely doing it all wrong. My personal favorite is Centro Wynnwood, but that’s just one of many enjoyable spots.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
It might sound ironic, but it’s a lot of my own customers that I’m so inspired & influenced by. I see business owners accomplishing crazy feats every day, some with my help, but many without. If they can keep going despite the odds and against all the random difficulties in business, so can I.
Then there are those best friends / family that don’t leave you no matter how ridiculous or crazy your ideas get, and you’re lucky if you even have a couple of them. I’m fortunate to have a handful. They know who they are to me.
