We had the good fortune of connecting with Scott Angelo and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Scott, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Oceana Coffee grew organically from a $35 Ebay purchase and a passion for a great cup of coffee. To be honest there was not a lot of thought process or even a belief that it could be what it is today. When we realized that this could be something bigger than roasting coffee for ourselves, we started to look at the future. What would we want as a customer in the world of coffee ?
So the thought process eventually was that we wanted to introduce the public to great coffee, one cup at a time, something memorable, something that they would go to bed thinking of , excited to try when the woke the next day. We wanted to educate as many as we could about great coffee, specialty coffee, small batch craft roasted coffee !
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
What to know about Oceana Coffee – Oceana Coffee was born from a selfish want of great coffee, Amy & I had been living in Brisbane, Australia for 3 years prior to moving back to Florida,(Amy is a Florida native) so we had been spoilt with a great coffee culture. We were also buying our coffee direct from an amazing local coffee roaster in Brisbane, so with those experiences imprinted as our belief of coffee, we looked for that same experience here in Florida when we moved back to live. 12 years ago that kind of experience barely existed in the USA, so Florida was a complete desert, the coffee was terrible, not just Florida but the US in general ! So with a $35 Ebay purchase and a lot of reading forums and articles I decided to start roasting my own coffee as a hobby. The hobby kept growing and growing, from the converted popcorn popper to a converted gas grill as a coffee roaster things were getting busy and more people were seeking out our coffee. Until eventually in 201o we bought our first commercial coffee roaster and opened our first retail location in 2011.
What sets us apart
In the early days what set us apart was our coffee (still is) but back in 2011 we were 1 of 3 specialty coffee roasters here in the state of Florida, Buddy Brew in Tampa was another. We sourced our coffee with relationships with the farms and we were only bringing in and roasting specialty grade coffee as single origins.
These days I think what sets us apart is our customer service, especially on the wholesale side of our business with over 100+ wholesale accounts, they know that we are there to support them any time day or night to ensure that their business is taken care of on the coffee front.
Was it easy
Running a business is never easy ! Everything becomes less stressful with experience and experiences, but with all of what we have experienced that just makes us stronger and wiser as well as more ready for what is coming.
What do I want the world to know about our brand and story ?
Oceana Coffee is continuing to grow, more rapidly in the near future…. but the story is the same we want everyone to experience a great cup of coffee, we want everyone to understand how awesome coffee can truly be !
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Our local area has some amazing natural and interesting places to visit Jonathan Dickinson State Park, the beaches, The Jupiter Lighthouse, Loggerhead Marine Center, Busch Wildlife Center just to name a few local attractions.
AS for food, drinks, entertainment ! Something we are really lucky to have in this area is an amazing collection of great food and drink. Some of our favourites places to eat Foodshack , Leftovers, Coolinary Cafe, District Bar and Table, Josco Bar and Oven Jupiter Donuts just name a few.
Coffee is easy, there’s only 1 place serving great coffee – Oceana Coffee.
Fun places to have a drink, TBC (Tequesta Brewery), Twisted Trunk Brewery, Coolinary Cafe has an amazing cocktail selection, Josco has a great cocktails,
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
So many people have been involved in our evolution, even perceived competitors in the space, we thank them for driving us to be better, stronger and smarter everyday. To thank some of the early encouragements has to go to family first in particular Amy’s parents, especially allowing me to convert kitchens into experimental coffee roasting adventures.
Next would be a great friend Fran Andrewlevich – owner Tequesta Brewing Co, Twisted Trunk etc, if it wasn’t for his want to expose the brand at one of his amazing events 12 years ago we probably would not have continued the crazy idea of creating a business.
Phil DiBella – Coffee Commune (Brisbane, Australia), Sean Edwards – Golden Bean USA/Aust
So many others along the way, but of course our team and the people around us deserve all the credit for helping us build the brand.
