We had the good fortune of connecting with Shaina Ramsey and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Shaina, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
Work life balance was nonexistent for me when I first started working for myself. I was balancing a job, cosmetology school, mom life and figuring out how I was going to build a successful salon business. I had this idea that if I wasn’t sacrificing or even suffering, I wasn’t working hard enough. Now, I know that’s not true. I know I can work hard AND carve out time to rest. I can’t give my all from an empty cup. Rest does not equate to laziness. Today my work schedule is a balance of work and rest with plenty of times for family.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I think my heart for others sets me apart from others in the industry. I absolutely love what I do but nothing tops the genuine connections I make with people. I love to hear their stories and make them feel seen. I’ve gotten where I am now because of those connections and putting people above profit. My salon, Copycat Salon, matches each service for someone in need. Anyone can come get a service whether or not they can afford it or not. Self worth is so affected by how you feel. It’s more than just a hair service. It was always easy in the sense that it came natural but the hardest part has been just waiting. Building clientele and skill both take time but both worth the wait and effort. The biggest lesson I’ve learned is to follow your heart, treat people well and work hard. There is nothing you can’t do if you’re doing those three things.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I wouldn’t be here without my first boss in the beauty industry, Teresa. It was the first time I saw someone doing what they loved while making a living AND being present for their children. I knew that was my goal and it feels surreal to be here now. I also couldn’t have made it this far without my grandparents. They were such a good example of hard work paying off and being financially literate.
