We had the good fortune of connecting with Suany Ortiz and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Suany, why did you pursue a creative career?
Pursuing art professionally always felt natural to me, it wasn’t a question of if, but when. I’ve been creative since childhood, but it was during my teenage years that I began to take art more seriously. It became not just something I enjoyed, but something that felt necessary, like a part of who I am.

One moment that really shifted things for me was when I was around 19. I walked into an art gallery and immediately felt, “I want my work to be here one day.” That space, that feeling, it clicked. I knew this wasn’t just a personal outlet anymore; I wanted to share my art with others.

I work mostly in abstract because I believe people, and our emotions, are abstract. There’s something powerful in seeing someone connect with a piece of mine in their own way. I love when someone sees their own story in my work, even if it’s completely different from my intention. That sense of emotional identity and recognition is what drives me.

Nature is also a huge part of my creative process. I often incorporate elements like shells, stones and quartz into my pieces because they remind me of how we’re all deeply connected to the earth and much peace nature holds. I want my art to make people feel understood, and more importantly, feel a sense of connection, to themselves, to others, and to nature.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Right now, I stay busy working on original pieces that are each truly one of a kind — no two paintings I create are ever alike. That individuality is important to me. I believe every piece should have its own story, energy, and identity. One of the things that really sets my work apart is how I incorporate natural elements into the art itself. I often use quartz, shells, crystals, and other organic materials in my paintings. It’s not just for texture, it’s about creating a physical connection to the natural world. I want people to not only see my art but feel something grounding in it.

Each painting tells a story in its own abstract way, and I’m proud of how people can find their own meaning within them. My process is very intuitive, and over the years I’ve learned not to rush it. Inspiration can take time, sometimes weeks, sometimes months or even longer. I used to feel pressure to constantly produce, but I’ve realized that real creativity can’t be forced. Honoring that natural flow has been one of the most valuable lessons in my journey as an artist

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’d take them to Little Havana and the art district, both full of amazing galleries, great food, and vibrant culture. Little Havana especially represents my culture, so it’s a meaningful place to share. The art district is full of inspiring street art and creative energy. Together, they really capture the city’s spirit.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Absolutely.! I’d dedicate my shoutout to my parents. Since I was very young, they’ve always encouraged me to follow my dreams and have supported my art unconditionally. They believed in my creativity long before I ever considered it a career. That kind of belief means everything, especially in a creative path where things aren’t always certain. I’m forever grateful for their love, patience, and constant encouragement. I truly wouldn’t be where I am without them. I’m also grateful for my fiancé, whose support means so much to me. He encourages me in my creative process, and helps me stay focused on my creative career.
