We had the good fortune of connecting with Yamily Castillo and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Yamily, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I’ve always been drawn to creativity, it’s how I naturally think and move through things. Painting started years ago, but the connection to art was always there. When I chose to pursue it seriously, it wasn’t a question of if I could do it, I already knew I could. It was more about finally committing after years of distraction. This moment is the result of coming back to something that was always mine.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My path wasn’t linear. I spent time not fully committing, and the biggest shift came from deciding to take the work seriously and show up for it every day. That’s what changed everything.

My work is rooted in material. I use sand, coffee, and layered mediums on canvas to build texture that carries both weight and movement. The materials are intentional they create something raw, grounded, and real.

What sets my work apart is its physical presence. It’s meant to be felt before it’s fully seen something you connect with beyond the visual.

The biggest lesson I’ve learned is that talent isn’t enough discipline is what builds a body of work and a career.

Through my brand Atelier Viento, I’m creating more than individual pieces. I’m building a language around texture, grounding, and presence. I want people to experience something honest and lasting when they engage with my work.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If a had a friend visiting I’d start with the beach. Miami’s energy and coastline are part of the experience. A relaxed day at a beautiful hotel, followed by a spa to set the tone.

From there, I’d focus on quality such as great restaurants with authentic Italian or a good Steakhouse, not tourist spots, but places where the experience feels real.

I’d include art as part of the rhythm gallery visits, weekend art shows, and museums like Vizcaya to bring in history and atmosphere.

To balance it out, I’d plan a boat day to see the city from the water, and a trip up to Palm Beach for a change of pace.

And of course, Miami at night music, dancing, and that mix of cultures that makes the city feel alive.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My biggest motivation is my son, he grounds everything I do. Beyond that, I’ve learned that while support and inspiration matter, the real work comes from within. Discipline, consistency, and showing up every day. That part is mine.
