We had the good fortune of connecting with Zach Cramer and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Zach, how do you think about risk?
We’ve all heard it, with risk comes reward. This saying has applied many times in my personal life and work life. That reward can be monetary, in happiness/quality of life, and hopefully both. When I think about the major risks I’ve taken, they all involved relocating geographically. When I was 23 I moved from Wisconsin to Sydney, Australia to work in the hospitality industry. I didn’t know a single person and felt like I had no idea what I was doing. I had the dream, a few thousand dollars, and was determined to make it work though.. It was one of the scariest things I’ve ever done but ended up being one of the best. I showed myself I can make these big leaps and still land on my feet. From there it was New Zealand and then New York.

In Manhattan I worked my way up to a great career in beverage creation and bar management within restaurants. Everything was going great until the Covid-19 Pandemic came along and pulled the rug from the entire hospitality industry. I tried to wait things out but was apparent that it was not getting back to normal for a long long time.

During my time unemployed and basically locked in a studio apartment and going a little crazy. I needed something to do, a project of some sort. In my brainstorming I remembered something I saw 7 years prior. At a beach in Australia I saw this guy on the beach making blended drinks for his friends on a bicycle. I always thought it was so cool. How fun would it be to make cocktails and smoothies like that for a job! So I bought a bike and started converting it into the dream that today is Blend BIke. Once I had momentum there was no stopping me from building this bike. It took about 6 weeks to complete the bike and have it look and function the way I wanted.

I finished building the Blend Bike in November and at that point realized my fatal flaw. “Who in the world is going to want a blended drink/smoothie in the winter” I said to myself. I knew if I was going to do this for real I needed a place that was warm year round. Southern Florida was the loud answer.

It felt like the biggest risk moving to Miami. Here had this smoothie bike that I’d only made drinks with in my studio apartment. Apart from that I didn’t know how this was going to work. I didn’t know anyone. I didn’t know where I was going to be able to set up, what the local laws were for mobile vending. I didn’t know how I was going to transport the bike. How I was going to convince my wife to leave the place she loved. The list goes on, but I had a lot of momentum and the dream that it’s possible, I could actually make this work maybe.

Nine months later and it’s actually working! I love Miami and I love what I do. I bring so much joy to people every week with Blend Bike and I think its the greatest thing. I mean I have a pedal powered bicycle that makes blended drinks, how cool is that. I often say to myself “I can’t believe this is my job”. I give the community an eco friendly healthy smoothie option that’s also a one of a kind experience. I also use my cocktail background to make some truly amazing drinks for private events and that sector is taking off nicely. As blend bike continues to grow I see myself getting into more and more events and maybe even a brick and mortar location one day.

If you haven’t pedaled a drink on the Blend Bike and had a smoothie or cocktail from us you’re missing out. You can find us every weekend at different markets open to the public, or book us for your next event even!

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Blend Bike is a pedal powered bicycle that makes smoothies and blended drinks via riding the bike. It’s optionally interactive, meaning guests can pedal their own smoothies, or we can do it for them. We absolutely stand out and are a great eco-friendly drink option. As a mobile business we do different markets, festivals, and a variety of private events. It got to where it is today with a dream and a lot of problem solving along the way. Piece by piece I constructed the bike itself and the entire mobile bar setup that usually accompanies the Blend Bike. I overcame a lot of the challenges through research on the internet, YouTube university I like to say, and good old fashion trial and error. I’ve learned a lot of lessons along the way. Some key lessons are, value yourself and your time, it’s okay to say no, constantly look for ways to improve, stay hydrated, and smile big.
I want the world to know Blend Bike as the most fun and also best tasting drinks out there. I want to promote using local produce, support local businesses, and have fun while doing it. Our story is built on an silly idea, a left field dream that is now a physical reality. We blend drinks by pedaling a bike using no electricity. It’s a one of a kind experience and certainly not your average smoothie.
