Parenting is an incredibly important responsibility and so we wanted to get a conversation going with input from parents in the community. We asked them: what is the most important thing you’ve done as a parent? We’ve highlighted some of the responses below.

I think that the fact of having called my sons’ attention into observing the beauty of the small everyday changes in nature has impacted their way of seeing the world. Nowadays, they are the ones that call my attention to see, for example, the Moon, the trees, the clouds, the sunset. The most important thing I did as a parent was keeping the lines of communication open so that my children were able to express their feelings and communicate their issues without me shutting them down. Grant it there was things that I did not want to hear as a parent but in order to maintain their trust, to help resolve their issues, understand how they are feeling, as a parent I have to be an effective listener. Implementing such a practice has had an impact on my children in that when it comes down to decisions or issues related to individuals in their circle they know as a parent they can come to me for guidance. Being a parent and a entrepreneur is a very challenging combination for the simple fact that your income is not stable. As an added challenge being a parent takes a lot of your time and attention. This leaves little time to focus on your business/career. However, the one good thing about living the entrepreneur life is that you can be flexible with your time to be around as they grow up. Basically I work nights and weekends but i get to be around most days and my daughter gets to see me most of her waking hours as opposed to other parents that only see their kids in the morning and usually before bed, I feel I have created a great relationship with my 3 year old daughter for this reason.
