We had the good fortune of connecting with Ebehi Diaz and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ebehi, what do you want your legacy to be?
A female architect who dedicated her career to creating well designed buildings and spaces in underrepresented communities globally, while educating members to discover the potential of resources within their neighborhoods. With this, I aim to encourage all architects and designers that all communities deserve good design regardless of their social, economic or cultural backgrounds.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Layers of Design Creative studio is a multidisciplinary studio that is focused on global community development and enrichment through design and architecture. We are passionate about design and designers that create an impact in society through their work. Layers of Design originally started as a design podcast where stories and experiences of designers and creatives are shared with the goal of inspiring designers as well as pushing me to discover my voice as a young professional. It recently evolved into a business where I pursue my dreams of building well designed communities globally. At Layers of Design, we participate in competitions, host weekly podcast episodes, biweekly live webinars and get involved in our community through volunteering. Our passion is definitely what sets us apart. I am most proud of the growth and opportunities that have been presented through the hard work we put in daily and I am so excited to see how far we go. Though the creation of the studio is new, it’s been rather challenging streamlining what the focus is and the most beneficial ways to move forward with set goals. Coming from a creative background, I have no experience in running a business. I constantly dedicate time, and resources to seeking out business minds that can propel the company. I believe that just because we can all learn a skill does not mean we must so, I prefer to dedicate the needed resources to finding experts trained in their fields that can be vital additions to the growth of Layers of Design. I have learned that the only thing preventing us from achieving a goal is ourselves. It’s been a journey of unlearning and relearning the needed skills to run a business from building necessary connections to working on my confidence and mental health. I have also adopted the habit of constantly learning, researching and practicing my skills. I want the world to know that Layers of Design Creative Studio is building a resilient group of creatives who are passionate about global community development.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
This is a dream week! I will start off with visiting South Beach because we are in Miami. We will explore the stores on lincoln road and if it is a Sunday, definitely get some fresh fruits and juices from the farmers market. I’ll take them to some of my favorite spots in the area like Sugar and Paul. Most of the trip will be making them indulge in the vast options of cuisines that Miami has to offer. Starting at Calle Ocho, we will experience an explosion of culture just by walking down the street, popping into one or two bars and definitely saying hi to the people playing dominos. Wynwood is a must. There are a variety of bars, clubs, restaurants and everyone’s favorite, the murals from talented artists! Some of my favorite spots in Wynwood are KYU (the menu is phenomenal, you have to try the coconut cake and the wynwood mule), Miami Mojito Company (best mojitos I’ve had in Miami), Wood Tavern (their music never fails, and they play great afro beat tunes which takes me back home every time), and Morelia (amazing paletas). I’ll probably take them to Coral Gables to experience a different side of Miami, pop into one of my favorite bars (The Bar), head over to Coconut Grove for brunch or explore the art markets, and Vizcaya Museum. We will pass by Brickell City Center because the architecture is pretty impressive. The trip will be concluded with a BBQ at a park that has a view of the beach or ocean like Matheson Park, Crandon Park or Alice W. Wainwright Park.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
So many people deserve recognition in my story. From my parents who set the foundation for my educational and career success as well as instilling vital skills like hard work, perseverance, communication, and the importance of creating relationships with people. My sisters have played an important role in growing with me and pushing my ideas further, my amazing group of friends around the world have constantly encouraged me to keep pushing through, and definitely my husband who is the most supportive and encouraging life partner that I could have asked for. I have built a pretty solid support system but when it all comes down to it, I give all the credit to God for the blessings and strength he keeps sending my way.
