We had the good fortune of connecting with Ellen Marchman and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Ellen, can you share the most important lesson you’ve learned over the course of your career?
How many of us listen before sharing opinions? I’ve learned over the years listening is a sole strategy. People, clients, vendors, colleagues need to be heard to feel valued. If you allow sharing of insight, stories, and feelings at the moment you are able to understand the narrative. Do they need control, accountability, success? That’s when I come back with solutions.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
While in college at CU Boulder, I took an internship with the Mayor of Denver’s press office, and it changed my world. I loved working with journalists, writing, being on top of the news cycle and the press secretary really championed my development. After graduating, I decided to go Los Angles instead of Washington, D.C., and I’ve never regretted that decision. I spent a decade working with a top tier PR rm focused on culinary and hospitality. The pace was fast, clients exciting and upper management were seriously smart. Several are still my mentors today.
I left LA for Miami, because it felt right for my personal journey. That was over 20 years ago and seeing Miami become a beacon is invigorating. Miami is still a small town in my industry and having a network is paramount. I always say, life in Miami is different – you need to have perspective of how this diverse community thrives and almost a sixth sense of what to expect next. Having deep roots here is a commodity.
Over the years I learned never to burn bridges. Integrity and trust are personal currency.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
1. Early morning paddle board off Morningside in Biscayne Bay
2. Breakfast or lunch at La Social on Biscayne and 76th
3. Beach time at Soho Beach House
4. Concert at Miami Beach Bandshell with Rhythm Foundation
5. Dinner at Amara at Paraiso on the water
We are in Miami, it’s all about the sun, sand and music and living life as your best self.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
