We had the good fortune of connecting with Fabienne Rousseau and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Fabienne, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I often work on my own so self reflection is common practice. I want my line to be an accessible & fun way connect to my third eye vision. The thought process behind starting my own business sounded more like a pep talk to myself. I was aware of all it would take from my end, time, effort, investment, the endless learning curve. I said look Fab, you’re a badass! If anyone can pull this off, You can! Let’s make the gear you’ve always wanted to rock! Let’s create sick art pieces personally designed and curated for a streetwear & accessories line. The possibilities are endless – lets go! So I went into research mode and taught myself how to work digitally on the iPad through the Procreate program, i experimented with various vendors & sample options, etc. It was a tedious, frustrating, and rewarding process. To date, I’ve created a robust line up of merch with my artwork on it from giant bean bag chairs to umbrellas, stickers, athletic wear, home goods, beach towels, and apparel.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My artistic style is difficult to define, hence the moniker ‘Fabstract’. It’s a combination of my name (Fabienne/Fab) & artistic style, which widely varies but includes Graffiti, Calligraphy, and Figurative works through an abstract lens. Through Drawing & Painting, I allow my audience a glimpse into my third eye. I’m an explorer and confronter of the past, present, & the unknown. I got to where I am professionally with lots of hard work, sacrifice, believing in myself and dreaming big! Nothing has ever come easy to me in my life. I’ve had to work harder & smarter since I’m the child of Haitian immigrants, a Black Woman, and an Artist. Fortunately, My Parents are amazingly selfless & kind people who taught me what it means to be all of these things in America at a very young age. I’ve always faced challenges and probably always will , that’s just the way this world works, it’s how we overcome them that speaks volumes. It’s so important to know who you are, where you’ve come from, how to continue to move forward & motivate, create your safe space & support system. The Fabstractink lifestyle brand is as complex as it’s creator. Are you ready?

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would definitely take my visitor to the beach for fun in the sun, Wynwood to experience the only Graffiti/Street Art capital of the world. NEw murals are always in progress! The Wynwood Walls has art classes for every age, dj sets on Saturday & Sundays 1:30-6:30pm, & WDNA Jazz in the Garden every last Thursday of the month.
I’m a foodie, so Miami has an endless assortment of spots to hit up. Let me just drop a few places… Omakai, 1800Lucky, El Chalan, Cafe Abbracci, Joey’s, Lucali, La Pasadita!
Nite Owl Drive-In theater is always a treat for a low key experience!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My husband B is always in the cut supporting me! My Grrl Stephanie Menjivar was a tremendous help in organizing the business / marketing aspect of my venture. She’s a Marketing Director & runs an Art Business Accelerator Program which I was the guinea pig for. I learned quickly about certain marketing & business details that I would’ve never known about. Steph was imperative in the launch of Fabstractink.com. It’s always a blessing to have a solid support system.
