We had the good fortune of connecting with Jeffrey Moskovitz and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jeffrey, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I’ve lived down here my whole life and grew up on the water going out on the boat nearly every weekend with my family. I still do that but so much has changed on the water. Licensing requirements are minimal, all you really need is money. As I got older I become much more concerned about safety, especially for my 3 kids when we’re on the boat. I’ve seen so many dumb things, people literally have no idea what they’re doing. There are plenty of IG pages dedicated to that and the Qualified Captain’s page was truly the catalyst. It’s pretty humorous but they show how dumb and unsafe boaters can be and that’s why I started LTB Miami. I really promote safety and being a better more confident boater. Having as many safe boaters on the water as we can have.

What should our readers know about your business?
I worked in corporate finance for quite some time, I had good bosses and bad bosses. The last couple were pretty bad. Staying super late, making up deadlines and having us run around like crazy for no reason. Just to flex their power on a bunch of 20 somethings. After a restructure and my last corp job I had the opportunity to purchase a business that was very complimentary to my family’s freight forwarding business and I became a licensed Customs Brokers, dealing with imports. On slow days I would do what anyone else does and play around on IG and started following a bunch of boating accounts. In the meantime a lot of my clients were slowing down and waiting to see what new tariifs/duties would be in the coming months and years. One day I was watching some instructional videos and I was like “I could do this too!”, I’ve taught a bunch of ppl in informal settings how to dock or tie their lines right. And I started brainstorming names and ideas and came up with Learn to Boat Miami, pretty simple, the name tells you what we do. What sets us apart is the more personal approach, not so much of a classroom approach although I do have a curriculum I’ve built. Although the topic is serious, boats are expensive, consequences of mistakes can be serious, even fatal but I try to keep it light and fun for all ages. I really try and focus on safety and convey that message to all of my clients.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Obviously, I’m gonna give you some on the water recs. Boater’s Grill in Bill Bagg’s park is my go to on the boat. It’s a nice boatride, you get to see the city and the skyline and then enjoy a delicious meal and some drinks. I also love taking a drive down to the keys, it’s so close but feels like you’re on vacation even if it’s just for the day, love that keys lifestyle, keys disease if you will. Quick stop at Alabama jacks, the drive down to Islamorada to dive bar on the bay. Have some drinks, get that famous lobster roll and then stop by dry rocks at bakers cay hotel on the way back up. For dinner hit up carnicero’s kendall location and sit at the bar. So many things to do here. Go to the beach work on that tan. That being said I love the water, I love the ocean but I hate the sand! Get’s all over everything

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
First of all thanks to my parents for buying your first boat, I wouldn’t be in this spot without them. I still tell everyone, clients included that my dad’s the only one I can’t teach, he should use someone else. And thanks for their love and support. Shoutout to my older Sister who finally realized that I’m not being an asshole on the boat, I’m just trying to be safe. Thanks to my Girlfriend Robyn for the encouragement and support while building up this business, the website and our IG page. And the most important, my kids Alex, Max and Stella who love being on the water!
