We had the good fortune of connecting with Megan Morrison and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Megan, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
When I was a kid, I was always creating something, whether it was music, dance or some kind of art project. Being creative fed my soul and that has stayed with me through adulthood. I don’t think I could ever work a 9-5 job. I spent many years bartending and working events and always knew that I wanted to have my own business, I just didn’t know how to get there. It took a few years to put everything together and I am still learning and growing, but I think I’m getting the hang of it.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am very passionate about everything I do. That’s why starting one business was not enough for me. I have always been a musician and performer and I still sing and dance professionally. I started my entertainment company when I started performing full time. Something about being on stage just makes me so happy. I’ve always felt that way!
I opened my design business about four years ago and it started with me making and selling wall hangings. Eventually it turned into a full wedding/event design & floral business. I design weddings, provide decor and furniture rentals as well as custom floral arrangements. I also have my shop where I sell custom costumes and wall art. It’s been a lot of hard work and learning over the past four years, but I’m very proud of everything I’ve accomplished. I pride myself on taking the time to get to know each client I book. I want them to feel special because they are investing a lot of time and money into their wedding or event. I really try to listen to them and if they want something I haven’t done before, I try to learn and make it happen for them. I will be forever growing and learning.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Mila on South Beach for dinner because the food is amazing there! It also happens to be one of the places I perform at and I just finished designing costumes for some of the other performers there.
A full day in Wynwood. Lunch at Pastis, walk around to look at art and shop, maybe a pizza from Mister 01 and end up at Savage Labs to play games, listen to music and stick around for the live entertainment.
A day in Key Biscayne. Go to the beaches, whole fried fish for lunch at the Boater’s Grill, explore Bill Baggs State Park, and end up at the Rusty Pelican for dinner.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I am so grateful to have the support of my loving husband and my mom. My husband has always believed in me and he has been a key factor in helping me start both of my businesses. He believed in me even at times when I doubted myself. That’s so important and I thank him for that. My mom has been my biggest supporter from day one. She has always encouraged me to follow my dreams and do what makes me happy. She has been my rock through some very challenging times and I will forever be grateful to her.
