We had the good fortune of connecting with Stephanie Ortiz and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Stephanie, what is the most important factor behind your success?
For over 25 years, the my family has strived to keep the Mexican tradition alive by using the finest and freshest ingredients available to prepare Tequiztlan’s authentic Mexican cuisine following Abuelita’s recipes. The main factor behind our success has been staying authentic and upholding our integrity, not only with our guest, but with our community.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Paying homage to it’s beginning roots of Mexican flair and cuisine that go back to 1991, Tequiztlan Restaurant & Tequila Bar boasts an upscale twist to the typical Tex-Mex cuisine. This Miami Beach hotspot offers guests the chance to dine with style, featuring an eclectic menu offering savory, authentic bites of abuelita’s classic dishes including: enchiladas, the chimichanga, flautas, fajitas, nachos and many more. Tequiztlan has a way of transporting its guests to Mexico all through their expansive Mexican food and drink selection.

The road here has definitely had its challenges and I would say what has helped us stick around has been the constant support from our community, from Lincoln Road all the way to where we are located now in Sunset Harbour, we love you!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would definitely start with Sunset Harbour, it’s a real gem! Whether it’s getting breakfast at True Loaf Bakery and walking over to the marina or splitting a delicious pizza Lucali, our neighborhood is the best place to explore. Our family business has sister restaurants that are operated by my siblings, with that said I would take them on a family tour! Starting with Rancho Grande in Kendall led by my sister Genesis, then Rancho Grande in North Miami led by my brother George. My family is a huge fan of being around the ocean, so I would take anyone to South Pointe for a sunset stroll and a meal at Smith & Wollensky.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
In 1991, Don Manuel (my dad) and Marlen (my mom) opened “El Cielito Lindo” – the first Mexican restaurant in South Beach – and changed the name to “El Rancho Grande” in 1992. El Rancho Grande’s doors were opened for 23 years and left a memorable mark on the South Beach restaurant scene — known for the best Mexican cuisine and margaritas, and, of course, the biggest Cinco de Mayo block party. So they credit definitely goes to my parents, not only for their sacrifice, but for all that they have pass on to my siblings and I.
