We had the good fortune of connecting with Freaks Design Co and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Valentina & Gaby, how do you think about risk?
As saturated as our industry is, in a world where communication is so accessible and you can reach so many people at the same time, we believe taking risks is extremely important. If you don’t, your work is going to fall flat and get buried beneath all the millions of other people trying to make an impact. The only way to be moved to the front in today’s world, is by taking risks. Our company has really put that foot forward beginning with the name, Freaks Design Co. We like to work with people who don’t consider themselves as fitting a certain mold, love to take risks, and aren’t afraid to stand out. We thrive from creating connections with those people through our work. Through their trust in us, we’ve been able to put out our best work and continue to grow as individuals and as professionals. We get to bring their vision to life.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
We think what sets us apart is, like we mentioned before, the risk-taking. We’re always looking for ways to create unique brands and push ourselves to think outside the box. We like to approach projects with a sense of wanting to learn how to do it all and be 100% hands on. It allows us to leave our comfort zone and never stop at a “I don’t know how to do this” thought.

We’re really proud of the fact that people have been really receptive towards our work and everything has been completely word of mouth. Every client we’ve had so far has just been through working with someone they know and that client being really grateful for what we did for them. It’s been a genuinely humbling journey with this company to see it grow so organically.

Both of us have very similar stories in how we got to where we are. We both grew up always loving art in families of more traditional career paths. We were taught to believe that following a creative passion wouldn’t be the best move financially, but ultimately the love and passion to create became bigger than anything else. The key to where we have gotten to now, we believe, has been our passion for design. We’re always willing to acknowledge the fact that we don’t know it all and are going to constantly learn something new in this profession. It wasn’t easy to get here, especially because design is extremely subjective. Some people will love your work and some people will hate it and that’s something that’s hard to overcome because design is very personal to the designer. In the end, we’re just happy to put out work we’re proud of that came from a place of passion.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
We’d like to use this space to shoutout our friend and client, John Falco—co-owner of Firepit Hospitality. He really understood what we were trying to accomplish through our work from the beginning. He gave us one of our first brand identity projects as Freaks Design Co. when we created the Maxwell Bros concept together and really injected this strong sense of belief in us as young designers in the industry. He really is, what some designers might dare to say, the perfect client.
