We had the good fortune of connecting with Alp Akmaz and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Alp, why did you pursue a creative career?
I chose to pursue an artistic and creative career because music and art have always been my heart and soul. From a young age, I was captivated by how music could transcend words and bring emotions to life in ways nothing else could. It became clear to me that my purpose in this world was tied to that feeling—the connection to something bigger, something universal. Music is not just a passion; it’s a calling. It’s my way of communicating with the world, of expressing the inexpressible. Through art, I feel like I can share pieces of my soul, touch others’ lives, and, in turn, be reminded of the beauty of our shared human experience. This path isn’t just a career for me; it’s my reason for being, my way of creating meaning and leaving an impact on the world.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My art is deeply rooted in my love for the Balaban, a traditional instrument from Middle east that’s unlike anything else. It has a rich, soulful sound that resonates with a profound emotional depth. I’m proud to bring this unique instrument to new audiences, blending its ancient melodies with modern influences. It’s not just about the sound, but the story and culture behind it. As a musician from Turkey now living in the U.S. for the past 8 years, I find it exciting to share a piece of my heritage with people who might not be familiar with the Balaban, and to show them how this instrument can create connections across cultures.
My journey to where I am today hasn’t been easy. It’s been full of challenges, both technical and personal. Adapting to life in a new country, while staying true to my roots, was difficult at first. The language barrier, adjusting to a new culture, and finding my place as an artist in a different musical landscape were all hurdles I had to overcome. But through it all, music has been my anchor. I’ve leaned on my passion, learning and growing along the way, and building a bridge between the traditions of my homeland and the diverse sounds I encounter here in the U.S.
One of the most important lessons I’ve learned is the power of perseverance. There were moments when I doubted myself, when I felt like giving up, but I realized that growth never comes without challenges. Every struggle taught me something valuable about resilience, creativity, and the importance of staying true to my art. It’s also been crucial to surround myself with people who believe in my music and encourage me to keep pushing boundaries.
What I want the world to know about me and my music is that it’s not just about playing an instrument; it’s about telling a story, carrying the legacy of my culture, and creating new connections. Through the Balaban, I hope to share something that transcends borders, something that speaks to the heart. My brand is built on authenticity, passion, and the belief that music has the power to unite and inspire, no matter where we come from.
